As it should be...
I was hurriedly leaving campus for my car today. I held the door for an older man with his arms full. Once we were both out of the doorway, I passed him politely. Of course, since I was hurrying, it follows that I would meet someone and feel obliged to stop to talk. The man, I hadn't noticed, passed me in the mean time.
Once finished, I continued on my way, once again passing the older man. I commented that I talk too much, implying that I'd get more done if I wasn't so social (a distinctly American/Japanese mindset). He simply said, "That's as it should be."
I was compelled to dwell on these words for the remainder of the walk to my car. Funny how some chance encounters can have such a profound effect on your life.
